What is the current status of energy exploration in Guercif, Morocco?

In North Africa's energy exploration sector, the focus is now on pragmatism and precise targeting.

Où en est l’exploration énergétique à Guercif, au Maroc
Partager

As Morocco’s push for energy sovereignty gathers pace, Predator Oil & Gas, an independent company based in Jersey and listed in London, has just taken another step forward. On October 15, the company announced the allocation of £775,000 specifically earmarked for exploration and testing work in the Guercif Basin, located in the north-east of the kingdom. This amount is part of a larger conditional fundraising totaling £2.5 million, which will also support its assets in Trinidad and Tobago and in Ireland with the Corrib South project.

As an observer of energy flows and geopolitical dynamics in the Mediterranean, I see this operational announcement as a clear intention to turn Morocco’s onshore gas potential into reality. The stakes go beyond a simple financial press release: the goal is to accumulate enough solid technical data to convince major industrial partners and formalize partnership agreements. From the recent drilling to the helium assessment and the prospects for local commercialization, here is a closer look at a high-value exploration strategy.

A Spending Programme Targeting the Guercif Subsurface

The budget Predator Oil & Gas has allocated to the Guercif licence is no accident. It follows a precise technical schedule drawn up after the latest drilling work in the field. The £775,000 envelope is split into three distinct but complementary operational components:

£500,000 for additional drilling and testing costs on the MOU-6 well.

£175,000 for preparations ahead of the deepening of the MOU-5 well.

£100,000 to fund a technical study dedicated to unconventional gas resources.

Promising Results from the MOU-6 Well

This financial breakdown comes on the heels of a pivotal technical milestone. Drilling of the MOU-6 well was completed down to its target depth of 950 metres. In an operational update published on October 14, Predator’s management confirmed that the initial 20-day schedule had been met to the letter. Even more encouraging for the geological teams, the well encountered an upper target zone 21.2 metres thick, clearly exceeding the 13.2 metres observed in the neighbouring MOU-3 well. This configuration matched the company’s pre-drill models, validating its initial geological interpretations in this sedimentary zone.

The results of the ongoing tests will make it possible to assess this interval precisely and refine the overall understanding of the basin. This new data will be combined with historical information gathered from the MOU-1 and MOU-3 wells. The stated objective is to produce a comprehensive update of the gas potential assessment for the licence area.

Broader Prospects: Helium and Underground Storage

Beyond the simple monetization of conventional gas from the MOU-6 well, Predator Oil & Gas is broadening its technical horizons on the Guercif licence. The company holds a 75% majority interest in this onshore licence, which covers a considerable area of about 4,301 square kilometres. The remaining 25% is held by ONHYM, Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines. This public-private joint venture illustrates the Moroccan state’s willingness to partner with dynamic international players to map its subsurface in depth.

The Search for Helium and the Choice of Lightweight Solutions

In its roadmap, the company plans to deepen the MOU-5 well by at least a further 640 metres. This strategic move has a dual purpose: to investigate the possible presence of helium, a rare gas of high strategic value for advanced industries and the technological transition, and to look for associated gas. In parallel, Predator intends to evaluate underground gas storage opportunities, a crucial infrastructure for securing national supply in the event of fluctuations in international markets. A targeted study covering an area of up to 120 square kilometres has been commissioned to support this work.

To monetize these deposits, which are often modest in size or located in shallow pockets, the company is betting on flexible solutions. Compressed natural gas (CNG) or small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) appears to be the most realistic route for quickly supplying local industries with electricity or thermal energy, without waiting for the construction of large heavy-transport pipelines.

The Geopolitical and Economic Stakes of Moroccan Energy Sovereignty

To grasp the full significance of these investments in Guercif, they need to be placed within the broader energy context of the Sherifian kingdom. Morocco faces a historic dependence on hydrocarbon imports and has had to contend in recent years with the redefinition of its regional supply balances. Having national gas resources, even fragmented ones or those exploited through decentralized solutions such as small-scale LNG, is a major national security lever.

Predator Oil & Gas’s discussions with potential Moroccan partners fall squarely within this transition logic. In its fundraising announcement, management expected to publish the final results of the MOU-6 well within two weeks, stressing that this greater visibility should greatly facilitate the conclusion of partnership negotiations. At this stage, no agreement has yet been officially finalized, but the inflow of capital reflects investors’ confidence in the basin’s geological potential.

Nevertheless, caution remains in order. Oil and gas exploration inherently carries high financial and technical risks. The planned well tests will need to confirm not only the presence of gas in economically recoverable quantities, but also the viability of stable production flow rates. Moroccan authorities and their partners are therefore following these developments very closely, aware that each exploration success further strengthens the appeal of the Guercif Basin on the Mediterranean energy chessboard.

In conclusion, the injection of fresh funds by Predator Oil & Gas marks a turning point for the Guercif project. Between the validation of the MOU-6 well data, the future exploration of helium via MOU-5 and the search for agile commercialization solutions, Morocco is methodically pursuing its quest for energy independence. The coming weeks look decisive in turning these geological promises into concrete industrial partnerships.
