Marrakech Airshow 2026: Morocco showcases its air power

Marrakech Airshow 2026, what I expect from the 4 days that matter for Moroccan aerospace

From 7 to 10 October 2026, the Royal Moroccan Air Force base in Marrakech hosts the eighth edition of the Marrakech Airshow 2026. For four days, the Red City becomes a meeting point for manufacturers, military officials, diplomats and investors. Official communications promise flying displays and cutting-edge technology. I would rather look at what this show says about Morocco’s trajectory.

A biennial show that has become a strategic fixture

The Marrakech Airshow has existed since 2008 and takes place every two years. It is held under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI. Its organisers have traditionally included the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the National Defence Administration. For the 2026 edition, some sources also mention the Royal Armed Forces and the Royal Gendarmerie. In 2024, MEDZ, a subsidiary of the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion, was among the organisers.

This governance is telling: the show is not just a commercial showcase. It sits at the crossroads of industrial policy and defence policy, which sets it apart from many competing trade fairs.

To give a sense of scale, the 2024 edition ran from 30 October to 2 November over 12,500 m² of exhibition space. The closing report cited around 200 exhibitors and more than 75 official delegations, whereas pre-show announcements had mentioned 300 exhibitors. That gap between announcement and outcome is worth keeping in mind: trade show figures are often targets before they are facts.

What we know about the 2026 edition

The available information converges on several points, summarised here:

  • Dates: 7 to 10 October 2026
  • Venue: Royal Moroccan Air Force base, Marrakech
  • Edition: the eighth, under high royal patronage
  • Announced themes: industrial sovereignty, “Made in Morocco” manufacturing, high-tech defence systems, artificial intelligence and satellite technologies
  • Format: static display of civil and military aircraft, indoor exhibition, conferences and flying demonstrations
  • Announced attendance: figures vary by source, some citing more than 300 exhibitors and 100 delegations, others 15,000 visitors and 40 delegations

What I note most is how well the programme fits the national strategy. Talking about industrial sovereignty in 2026 means acknowledging that global supply chains have shown their fragility, in aerospace as elsewhere.

Why Morocco matters in aerospace

In about twenty years, Morocco has built an aerospace ecosystem that few African countries can claim. Organisers and specialised outlets speak of a network of 147 to 150 companies based in the kingdom, often around Casablanca and Nouaceur. These firms mainly work in wiring, aerostructures and the machining of parts for major prime contractors.

The challenge now is to move up the value chain. Wiring and parts subcontracting are a first step. Integrating subassemblies, mastering maintenance, repair and overhaul, or taking part in design is another. I will therefore read this show’s announcements through that lens: are they volume contracts, or skills transfers and higher-value investments?

The defence stakes behind the showcase

The Marrakech Airshow is not purely a civil show. It takes place on a military base and brings together official delegations. In 2024, senior US Air Force officials attended and displayed several aircraft, including a C-130J and a KC-135. That presence illustrates another role of the show: a platform for military diplomacy as much as a marketplace.

The regional context explains this dimension. Morocco is modernising its armed forces and diversifying its partners among Western, Israeli, Turkish and Emirati suppliers. Security dynamics in the Sahel and the western Mediterranean give these choices a significance that goes beyond simple equipment purchases.

I want to remain cautious, though. This type of show lends itself to announcements, but many defence agreements are neither made public nor priced. Corridor discussions often matter more than press releases, and we will only learn part of them.

Two ways of reading the event

Views on this kind of event are not uniform, and it is useful to set them side by side.

Supporters see a lever of national attractiveness. In their view, the show draws investment, creates industrial partnerships and establishes Morocco as a credible interlocutor for major groups. Tourism and business spin-offs for Marrakech add to the argument.

More reserved observers point out that a trade show is not enough to build an industry. They stress that the real issues remain training engineers and technicians, giving local SMEs access to financing, and keeping added value in Morocco. On the military side, others insist on transparency in procurement and on the trade-off between defence spending and social needs.

These two readings are not mutually exclusive. Together they form the most useful framework for judging the announcements of the coming days.

What I will be watching during the four days

I will pay attention to four signals. First, industrial agreements that provide for technology transfer or new production units on Moroccan soil. Second, the place given to space and satellites, announced as an area of expansion for this edition. Third, which foreign delegations attend and at what level, which indicates the state of defence relations. Finally, the gap between announced figures and those published at closing, as in 2024.

For the public, the appeal of the flying displays remains real, but access to the different areas depends on the type of pass. I recommend checking the show’s official website for access conditions, schedules and days reserved for professionals.

An edition to read beyond the spectacle

The Marrakech Airshow 2026 will be spectacular, as any show of this kind is. But I believe its real value will be measured later, in the contracts that materialise, the factories that open and the skills that are built. The question for Morocco, as for its partners, is whether this showcase can turn into lasting industrial capacity. The answer will come, at the earliest, in the months that follow.
